Seth and I started our trip on the 24th by arriving at Upper Works at 11:30am. We got ready and set out around noon and were at Flowed Lands by 2:30. I am not sure what average time is but it took us 2.5 hours with full pack. We had our choice of the 3 lean-to's at Flowed Lands so we occupied the Flowed Land Lean-to and IMO this is the best one in the area with phenominal views of Colden, Algonquin and Iraquois.
On Friday the weather was beautiful and not a cloud in the sky. Our plan was to hike Marshall on Friday but by the time we set up camp we knew we would be pushing daylight on the descent and we did not want to hike down Herbert Brook in the dark with headlamps. So we enjoyed the views from our lean-to and just chilled and explored. That night we did not have a single problem with the bear and either did the other campers in the area not even at Colden Dam. I guess the hazing is working!
We awoke at 6am on Saturday morning and were on the trail by 7am. We arrived at the start of the heard path at 7:30 and filtered some water and began our journey up the very obvious heardpath. There was a cairn marking the start with flagging along the way. We wook our time to the summit and arrived at around 9:30am and had the summit all to ourselves. The views were limited as the whole day had very low cloud cover. All we could see was the cone of Iroquois in and out of the clouds. The whole highlight of our summit time was the brave Pine Martin that played hide and seek with us. He seemed pretty brave as he got within 10 feet of us and we snapped a few photos. This was totally awesome as it was our first Pine Martin that we had ever seen!!!!! You should have seen the look on Seth's face when the Pine Martin ran behind me. I sware he saw a bear or something....lol I then saw it and I was flabbergasted too. Just amazing!!!!!! We spent about 45 minutes on the summit eating and watching and taking photos. When I download the photos I will post them. Seth and I just got home a few hours ago.
On our descent we ran into a few guys and we chatted and exchanged stories. Then we parted ways and then ran into another party of 6 and then another party of 3. In this party a man was taking down the flagging and he seemed pretty disgusted that it was there. He asked us if we had put it there and we told him no. So there is no more flagging on the route to Marshall and it does not need it anyways as this has to be the best trailess peak I have been on yet in reguards to the path being very well defined!
I could not believe the amount of people we ran into! At this point there were at least 12 hikers heading for the summit. I am so glad we had gotten an early start and I never thought Marshall was very popular until today! Then for another highlight of the trip. Seth and I ran into Alpine Summit and his wife and their puppy. This was an honor to meet the famous Alpine and the Mrs. When we told him there were at least 12 people in front of him I think he about fainted....lol We exchanged some words and stories for about 10 minutes and went on our way. I would love to meet him again and hook up for a hike.
Well the next plan of attack was Skylight and Gray. Seth and I reached Colden Dam and rested there. We started hiking and we were taking our time. We eventually reached the intersection where you head up to Lake Tear and decided to turn around as we knew we would run out of daylight and the weather started looking bad. As we started descending back to camp we got poured on....so we made the right choice by turning back. AS we would have froze on the treeless summit of Skylight. We eventually made it back to camp at 5:00pm and made dinner. Sure enough about 6pm the clouds broke and the sun came out and we watched the sun set on Colden. This was awesome!!!!!
So this morning being Sunday we awoke and made our way back to the car and started our drive home. This has got to be one of the best trips yet. Seth and I finally did not over due ourselves like we did back in June by hiking Colvin and Blake, Dial and Nippletop all in one weekend. Marshall in my opinion was a realaxing hike and not overly strenuous.
Well for the highlights:
1: The Marshall summit Pine Martin that we extremely enjoyed and I think he enjoyed the company too.
2: Meeting Alpine Summit and his wife.
3: This was my 30th summit and I got the chance to enjoy it with my great hiking partner and friend Seth.
This was an awesome weekend even though we got rained on
Happy Trails!
