Greetings,

This is my first time on this board. I'm not new to hiking and have done a few trails in the WMNF. I've done the Welch-Dickey and Cannon Mountain trails along with a few trails on the Kancamangus. I plan on doing the Mount Potash trail in September. Can anybody provide any helpful hints on this trail. Is it well marked?, in good shape?, worth the view? etc. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

:)

Potash is a very nice hike. It has very good views (especially out towards Carrigain and Washington) considering the relatively low altitude. It is well marked and easy to follow. One potential problem can be the crossing of Downes Brook, about 1/4 mile from the parking area. If you are unable to cross (unlikely in September, but possible) you can backtrack to the Kanc, walk westward on the highway a very short distance, cross Downes Brook and then follow a logging road which will then intercept the Mt Potash trail. This will be clearer when you view a map.

Also, from that same parking area you can climb Hedgehog Mt which also has good views.

Thanks

Thanks Maineguy, sounds like it'll be well worth the time.

Why wait until September? It is a popular snowshoe hike, too.

Unfortunetly Stan I can't get up to N.H. until September, that's when my vacation is. Potash will be just one of the trails I do. Very much looking forward to it. :)

Maineguy covered it well. Potash is a favorite. There's a nice brook crossing, then a section along the riverbank in nice conifers. Then you travel though nice hardwoods. Look closely at beech trees and you'll notice bear claw marks where they have climbed for beechnuts.

Then there is a very sharp tree-zone change back into conifers for the rest of the hike, very pretty. You break out on a ledge with a great view south to Mt Passaconaway. Then back into the trees and up to the summit.

At the end of the hike you can soak your feet in the Downes Brook and listen to your Enya. :)

Just to let you know that Mt. Potash is on the "52 Peaks with a View" List.

Thanks Aaron that's nice to know. The Potash trail is definitely on my list for my vacation trip. I'm sure that view will be even greater in September.

That'll be the best part. I'll either be listening to Enya or Loreena at that point. :)
