Took a mini vacation and had a chance to get a couple hikes in, but the campground we were staying at was seriously lacking in the WIFI department. :( The first hike was last Thursday and we did the Webster – Jackson loop.
We parked at the trailhead for the Webster-Jackson Trail. We could already see that the whole Presidential Range was in the clouds all the way to Mount Webster, but seeing a lot of blue sky everywhere else we were hopeful it would burn off. There were 3 other cars already parked there when arrived. Oh and for those of you have missed her, Brandi was with us for her 19th 4K footer.
It was about 7:30 when we started and it didn’t take long to get to the spur to Elephant Head. Once there we grabbed the Geocache, checked out the views and headed back down. The one thing that stuck out about this hike for us was how many bog bridges there were throughout the hike, some in need of replacement. That being said though, last Thursday the ground was somewhat dry for the most part, but there was plenty of water available for Brandi too.
After returning back to the trail, it started to go up and the up was a steady one. There was a lot of roots and boulders to contend with. We eventually came to the spur trail to Bugle Cliff and went up to check it out. We were happy to see that the clouds were starting to disappear. Coming back down to the trail, it wasn’t long until we hit the trail junction where the Webster-Jackson Trail splits.
We decided we would do the loop starting with Webster and work our way over to Jackson. Right away the trail drops steeply down to the Silver Cascade Falls. Most people see these falls from RT 302, but up here there is a nice cascade that flows into a pool before continuing down the mountain. Of course the steep down to see them, meant a steep hike to get back up from them. The remaining mile to the Webster Cliff trail was a relentless up. Once we hit the trail junction with the Webster Cliff Trail though it was an easy 0.1 mile to the summit of Mount Webster, then we went and enjoyed the views from the cliffs.
We retraced our steps back down the Webster Cliff trail to the trail junction with the Webster-Jackson trail and continued on it heading to Mount Jackson. We ran into a couple of AT thru hikers on our journey. The Webster Cliff Trail was a nice walk over to Jackson that is until you get to Jackson. It was our second time on the mountain, the first being from the Webster-Jackson Trail. Both ways to the summit have some steep scrambles on them. Brandi did great on them, of course she has 4 paws.
The summit of Jackson was far from crowded, but had more people then we were expecting on a Thursday. Oh and BTW, yes, we did get the Geocache on the summit. *** We checked out the views, took a break before heading down. We talked about going over to the Mizpah Hut and bagging Pierce again, but that would be our 4th time on Pierce and Brandi doesn’t need it for her list. It seemed like it would be admitting that we’re doing the Grid which we are not! :p
We took the Webster-Jackson Trail all the way back to the trailhead and headed back to the campground. Second hike info coming soon. ***
