trails: old logging road, unnamed trail
conditions: from rt 16 about 5.5 miles east of its junction with 201 we followed what i believe is townline road (sign missing, but also marked as mats 115) north to deadwater road to heald pond road. roads were in great shape until heald pond road runs between the ponds at which point it became pretty rough for a stretch and would be a bit much for a passenger car. we followed it past the ponds until we reached a cairn on the right at the start of a grassy old logging road (about 10 miles from 16). we parked a short distance back down the road and started our hike up the lightly travelled grassy road passing a couple other cairns and painted arrows along the way staying on the main road until a hard right turn uphill marked with a cairn and paint mark. this road led into the woods and the start of the trail. though the footbed was obscure in spots the trail was well flagged and cleared with cairns in some of the open areas. footing was nice and dry in the woods and over multiple sections of ledge, with a couple scrambles, up to the summit.
equipment: nothing in particular.
comments: a great hike to cap off a couple days in maine. a very interesting and scenic mountain. multiple open ledges on the ascent offered great views to the rangeley area and the helipad on the summit had great looks north to the moosehead lake area and the peaks in the 100 mile wilderness. i was impressed with how nice the trail was. clearly it was laid out with care some time ago and has been maintained since. if you are interested in more detailed info on the hike, as i don't believe it is listed in any guidebooks, drop me an email. a big thanks to jeremy for a couple nice days of hiking.
