Date of Hike: 11/19/12
Trail: Firewardens Trail
Trail Conditions: Frozen ground, no snow. 22 degrees when I parked
Special Equipment Required: Bareboots, orange clothing
Comments: The AMC Maine Mountain Guide gives good directions to find the trailhead. However, the last 2 bridges have been washed away (?Irene). With the freezing temperatures, the stream crossings are very difficult. Any rock that is slightly wet is covered with ice. I bush whacked about 1/4 mile upstream to find places to cross. (Actually, I fell in at the first attempt and had to go back and put on dry boots, socks, and pants).
The guide book mentions a cabin. A sign at the trailhead says that the cabin burned down a year ago. I did not see any clearings or possible sites of the previous cabin.
There are several trail reroutes (so maybe that is why I didn't see the cabin) and the footpath is not always obvious. I got out of the woods just before dark, but this trail might be difficult to follow after dark. There are blue blazes on trees.
