Hiked to the summit of Mt Abraham via Battell trail today. Stunning views, fresh snow (created a "winter wonderland effect"), and better weather (less wind, and full sun) than expected. Trail is now broken all the way to the summit (though it wsn't when the day started, and the first 5 people on the mountain turned around prior to the top when it got steep). Wore snowshoes all day (MSR Lightning Ascent - they have very good traction) as did most others I saw. No ice. About 8" of snow at the bottom (in the AM, looked like less in the PM on the way out) getting deeper as one got higher, up to (my estimate only...) about 2-3' of snow above 3000 ft. Looks like the lower sections of the trail will be snow free soon. The "summer" trailhead parking area is also accessible by ordinary passenger car now too. Others hiked in from Lincoln Gap via the LT and that route is probably fully packed now too.
