trails: ascutney parkway, slab trail

conditions: we parked off of 44a across from the entrance to ascutney state park in a large plowed out area. the road was snowmobile packed to the upper parking lot. footing was firm for the first a couple miles then a bit softer to the upper parking. the trail to the summit was ski packed until the slab split then boot broken up to the ridgeline. it was hardpacked from there to the summit with a little bit of ice. probably up to a foot of snow off the packed trail up high in the woods.

equipment: we used light traction all the way up and down opting to leave snowshoes behind after seeing the packed out road. it worked out, but in some of the softer sections of road they could have been helpful.

comments: great second hike of the day. we got started up a little later than planned reaching the summit around 4:30pm. unfortunately it was too cloudy to get any post sunset color from the observation tower. a bit of a cold breeze up top, but otherwise nice temps. skies cleared off enough on the way down to let the moon through which allowed us to descend without headlamps. thanks to cynthia for a great day of hiking.
