Mt. Avalon, Mt. Field, Mt. Willey, Mt. Tom via Avalon Trail, Avalon Spur, Willey Range Trail, Mt. Tom Spur, A-Z Trail
Date of Hike: Wednesday, Dec. 30, 2007
Trail Conditions: Packed Powder, Windblown Powder
Special Equipment Required: Snowshoes recommended for traction and for windblown powder, but not required.
Comments:
Well packed to Avalon/A-Z intersection. First brook crossing had full snowbridge, second required some rock hopping (easy enough to keep snowshoes on). Somewhat tough going up Avalon Trail due to buttslides. Portions of the trail between Avalon and Field needed to be rebroken due to wind.
Willey Range Trail to Mt. Willey had some post holes, along with a few windblown areas (I was rebreaking my trail on the way back).
Willey Range Trail from Field to A-Z was well packed. Mt. Tom Spur decently packed too. A-Z had a bunch of postholes. Top brook crossing could be challenging w/o snowbridge and with 3' snowbanks. Second from top brook crossing (in the gully) had full snowbridge.
