trails: chesley road, snowmobile trail, bushwhack
conditions: good plowed parking at the start of chesley road near merrymeeting lake in new durham. chesley road is part of a snowmobile corridor, but looked to be only getting travel by snowshoes and skis at this point and was loosely broken out. i followed it for a couple minutes to a junction with a snowmobile trail on the left signed for merrymeeting lake. this trail was unbroken with a foot plus of snow and headed in a nice line towards mt. bet. when the trail turned more south i started my bushwhack up the peak mostly slabbing up the south running ridge with some tight hardwood regrowth that opened up with increased rocky footing under the snow. some steep going led up to a bump on the south end of the peak. i continued across the summit area to what i assume is the highpoint a bit to the north. i then came back south and found the mountains south and east facing ledges which had great views. from there i headed down the south running ridge eventually dropping back to my earlier line.
equipment: i wore snowshoes the whole hike.
comments: nice hike up mt. bet. i figured there would be some views, but was pleasantly surprised with how nice the ledge views were. great looks south to the blue hills and over merrymeeting lake as well as a bit more east to prospect, pine and avery peaks. some tough snowshoeing in the rocky woods, but nothing a couple more feet of snow won't solve. great summit.
