Mt. Cabot, the Bulge and the Horn via York Pond, Bunnell Notch, Kilkenny Ridge and Unknown Pond trails
Date of Hike: Wednesday, October 29
Trail Conditions: A few inches of new, powdery snow at lower elevations with more snow and some ice up top. Trails down low were muddy/mushy in some areas with minimal freezing -- combined with new snow on top, sometimes difficult to see until too late where to step in order to avoid boot-sucking mud.
Water crossings on Unknown Pond Trail required some care -- water is high from recent rain and rocks are covered with thin film of ice.
Special Equipment Required: Barebooted entire route. Brought Stabilicers and almost put them on up top, but refrained -- with some care was able to avoid ice patches.
Comments: No VFTT -- snow all day long and low clouds ensured that. High wind gusts up top made shelter of Cabot Cabin a welcome respite. Great first "winter" hike of the season, although we're still in October.
NOTE: Called the folks at the hatchery and confirmed that for the foreseeable future they will be keeping the gate OPEN UNTIL 10:00 PM every evening. Suffice it to say, the folks there are very accommodating.
