The Bunell trail is clear of snow right up to the Kilkenny Ridge Trail. There is some snow up there in the col but snow shoes are no longer necessary in that area. There are numerous small stream crossings which are easily crossed. One brook crossing while still on the logging road. It takes a bit of wading, but is not difficult. The snow starts on the Mt. Cabot trail around 3700'. The ground is relatively free of snow around the cabin and on the first ledge. Otherwise it continues on over to the summit.
I had my snowshoes with me so I used them. I met a couple at the cabin who admitted that they needed snowshoes, but didn't have them with them.
The Bunell trail was dotted with wild flowers and paved with moose poop. It was a nice late spring hike on the Bunnell trail and an early spring hike on the upper stretch of the Cabot trail. Right at the junction with the Kilkenny Ridge Trail there are some long-johns and underwear hanging on a tree and a green sack lying on the ground. If you lost it, it's still there. I had a first time experience today. Apparently most of my water leaked out of the hydration pack while in the car trunk. I didn't realize it until I was about half way up and totally out of water. Although I had never looked for water up there, I had seen a sign for a spring up near the top and thought I could fill up there, but I was unable to find the spring. With 20/20 hindsight, I guess I should have turned back when I made the discovery because I came back really dehydrated. I did find a bottle of water in the hut. I had no idea where it came from so I put a couple of purification pills in it. After it turned the color of urine I drank it. It didn't taste all that bad and it was a life saver.
