conditions: sawyer river rd. hard packed by snowmobiles. signal ridge packed underneath with a few inches (or more in spots) of lightly packed powder on top down low. someone has travelled it since the last bit of snow. crossings mangable, but pretty open. i bushwacked the lower two on the way out. the others higher up were pretty standard. lots of wind blown snow on the traverse up the ridge over hard pack and crust. the open portion of the ridge was ice, hard pack and rock then deeper blown snow up to the summit. the winds will definitely move snow back in.
equipment: had the usual winter stuff. snowshoes were great from the car to the summit and back. some slipping on the descent with loose drifts over the crust. wind was sort of high today (enough to bump you around on the exposed section) so that kind of protection was key higher up and when exposed.
comments: the woods were beautiful. the wind was roaring all day and the crossing(s) of the exposed section of signal ridge were interesting. socked in from that point to the summit with occasional patches of open sky which made for nice vistas south and a bit west and east. lower down had great looks at the sandwich range. was hoping for clearer skies up top for pictures, but no avail. great day in the mountains.
