Mt. Chocorua via Champney Falls Trail and Piper Trail
Date of Hike: Wednesday, April 16, 2008
Trail Conditions: Spring snow, ice, wet spots
Special Equipment Required: None, those some might want Stablicers.
Comments:
Barebootable from parking lot to summit if you stay on the snow monorail.
Still about 2-3 feet on the Champney Falls Trail.
Still snow on the northern ledges of Chocorua. The final western approach (above the Liberty/Piper junction) is bare.
Trails to Middle Sister (Middle Sister Trail and the cut off) don't appear to have been used recently, would likely require snowshoes to get to the bare ledges.
Just over half a dozen blow downs, none major. Lots of sapling branches in leaning into the trail.
About half the water crossings are open, but none are tricky. Remaining snow bridges may be gone by the weekend with these temps.
