Special Equipment: Snowshoes
Comments: Yes, the trail can be barebooted, but be prepared for thigh-deep postholes. We wore snowshoes up and back and they were fine as long as we stayed in the center of the trail. Saw a guy wearing crampons (and blue jeans) and recognized his postholes up and back. Brian switched to crampons for the climb up the cone. I stayed with snowshoes but didn't go beyond the first open sub-summit bump, within waving distance and a "hello" of the summit, just to be safe. Even then, I had to remind myself that climbing up under control is easier than climbing down under control on hard ice/snowshoes. Beautiful day. Wind whipped on the open summit. Snow squalls all around the peaks and lovely flakes falling gently for our trip down made it seem more like February. Snow bridges practically gone. One tree to crawl under which will probably be walkable in a few weeks. Many sapplings tipped into the trail below the switchbacks makes for keeping distances between hiking friends a good idea.
