Mt. Coe, South Brother.
D&D hiked on 7 1 16. day 2 of our Baxter trip. stayed overnight in the park so we were at the marston trailhead at 6.30 a.m. hiked the marston trail to 3400 ft, mt coe trail to mt. coe, back to south brother spur, up spur to south brother and down again returning same way we came in. marston trail is in great shape as described on yesterdays post to fort mountain. A couple of blowdowns but no problems. Mt. coe trail from the upper junction with marston and heading toward south brother is narrow, but dry. Coe trail from south brother spur to coe is rocky and follows a side slope making it slow going.
The spur trail going up to south brother has lots of boulders but no slippery or water problems. There were no bugs on the trails until we got to about 200 ft from the summits. There, the black flies were out in full maine force. Quick breaks on each summit because of the flies. Terrific views on each peak with great hiking weather. Real nice variety of alpine plants on each peak. If you are heading up to Baxter, try to stretch out your vacation and stay an extra day or two and really enjoy what the woods has to offer. I was about 12 years old on my first trip to Baxter. The place just keeps building great memories.
We met briefly just one other couple while on the trail all day. Thank you so much for finding the watch we lost earlier in the day and leaving it for us at the trail head. Much appreciated. Also, thanks to the park rangers at kidney pond that work hard every day, and helped to make our stay very enjoyable and memorable.
Aprox 11.6 miles rt. Aprox 3300 feet elevation gain.
