trails: bushwack, roadwalk

conditions: hubbard brook road is in good condition. i parked near its end where it turns left uphill. i headed straight into the woods on a line towards the summit of cushman. woods were wet, as expected, but open at first becoming more scrappy with elevation. passed a couple of research areas along the way. once into the fir/spruce zone going was good to start then it thickened up significantly with a substantial amount of rotted blowdown mixed in. going was slow from there to the ridgeline. i hit the ridgeline a bit west of the summit and began checking out the numerous bumps heading to the east looking for a highpoint. i'd say there are a couple options on this one, but there is also a recognized highpoint that i walked by a couple of times before spotting it. once on the descent to the east towards green i hit the best woods of the day with open going and good footing. the woods again became scrappy down towards the col with some swampy sections and then were mostly thick hobblebush up to the summit of green. some more research areas along the ridgeline and near the summit. i took a line towards the end of hubbard brook road hoping to slab that way and avoid too much of a roadwalk and had good success at first. partway down i came into woods that must have been hit by a microburst of some sort as there was significant blowdown of large trees that pushed me well off my line to the south. i kept coming across these patches of blowdown as i continued on eventually deciding to just head directly to the road and walk it back to the car. hobblebush pretty well dominated the woods with some patches of spruce. about .5 from the road i picked up a marked route used by researchers to access various sites and followed it down across hubbard brook and up to the road. from there it was about 1.5 back to the end of the road. the tributary crossings were slick and slightly tricky today and the crossing of hubbard brook was not an issue, but it was wet.

equipment: nothing in particular.

comments: a wet day in the experimental woods. the sun made an appearance for a while around noon then on and off showers with a bit of thunder the rest of the hike. a fair amount of moose sign and a few good trails along the way. lots of hobblebush. great to be out.
