Mt. Field, Mt. Willey, Mt. Tom via Avalon Trail, Willey Range Trail, A-Z Trail, Mt. Tom Spur

Date of Hike: Saturday, April 4, 2009

Trail Conditions: Spring snow

Special Equipment Required: Snowshoes

Comments:

Avalon Trail to A-Z junction - spring snow, monorail maybe half the length. Snowshoes a good idea, especially when going over wet areas. One blowdown. Both water crossings no longer bridged - both will require getting boots wet as well, as some stepping stones are under water.

Avalon Trail from A-Z junction to Avalon Spur junction - minimal monorail, could be Microspiked. Didn't go to Avalon summit due to fog/clouds. No blowdowns.

Avalon Trail from Avalon Spur to Willey Range Trail to Mt. Field - pretty messy...monorail, postholes, etc. Snowshoes seemed necessary. No blowdowns.

Willey Range Trail from Field to Willey - some really nasty monorail starting about .1 miles from Field...very narrow, leaning to side. Monorail also goes over spruce in places, so barebooting may result in some very bad postholing. Packed trail also seems to deviate from actual trail slightly in a few places. No blowdowns.

Willey Range Trail from Mt. Field to A-Z Trail - some monorail, snowshoes a good idea. A blowdown or two.

Mt. Tom Spur - some monorail, crumbling a bit up high. A blowdown or two. Snowshoes a good idea.

A-Z Trail from Mt. Tom Spur to Avalon Trail junction - monorail, snowshoes a good idea. Water crossings are still bridged. A blowdown or two.
