Easy light powder/packed conditions turned to boilerplate ice around 4000'. Conditions became slippery on snow shoes. Already low balsams weighted down further with 1/2" ice coating. Trail markings obscured by branches and windblown snow. Could not find any above dual "Forest Protection Area" signs on one tree, below Garfield Ridge Trail. Summit appeared to be less than 1/2 mi away.
If time allowed, would have switched to crampons and looked a little harder. Four others turned around near same point I did. Trip still well worth it, crystal blue/white, perfect day on the mountain.
