Mtn: Hale via Zealand Road-Hale Brook Trail-Lend-a-Hand-Twinway-Zealand Trail-Zealand Road
Date of Hike: Saturday, February 2, 2008
Trail Conditions: Zealand Road was plowed for the first mile and hard packed the rest of the way. HBT had about 3" new snow over a previously packed trail. One blowdown at about 0.5 from trailhead. Lend-a-Hand had about 1' of new snow. Watch out for fragile ice and snow cover on the bog bridge section or you might fall in! From the Hut to Zealand Road the ski and snowshoe track had been thoroughly postholed.
Special Equipment Required: Carried FWG, used snowshoes everywhere except the road. Didn't need crampons. Could have used an ice ax on the 0.3 section of sidehill on HBT. The heavily loaded slope seemed like it could avy at any time.
Comments: Temperatures were mild and although there were no VFTT, today's high winds and blowing snow were tolerable on this sheltered hike. I ran into VFTT's personality Drewski on the way up Mt. Hale.
