Well, I set out to hike Carter Dome and Height on Satuday... I only got as far as Mt Height. I wanted to make sure I got there before Carter Dome, since it has the better view and it was a perfect day. However, at the turn-off for Height from Zeta Pass, the trail was unbroken. I handled that OK solo, but finding my way from Height to Carter Dome proved to be too much. 8 feet of snow on the ground with 8 feet of snow in the trees made it impossible to find the trail. The treetops were all touching the snow. It was a great day, however, and an excellent way to end the winter. Here are some photos:

Great pics Chomp! It was another fine day to end the winter season on, just like last year :)

There sure is a lot of snow up there. When I did Carter Dome a while back the upper trail sign for the Carter Moriah trail to Mt Height was completely buried.

What a day for views :)

Don't have the book in front of me, but I'm pretty sure it is "Mt Hight". The snow gets amazingly deep up there, doesn't it. But I bet it would have been a great ski.

Dave,

I just looked on Topo! and sure enough it shows it as Hight. However, I checked my trip report and this sign has it as Height.

It is of course pronounced Throatwarblermangrove :D

Wow, I had no idea. You know, this mountain is only of my favorite spots in the Whites, I try to hike it at least once a year, and I had NO CLUE that it wasn't spelled Height. Unreal. I guess the misspelled trail signs helped with that, but honestly I just never noticed the different spelling. Next thing, someone is going to tell me that it isn't Boot Spur. :)

Anyway, I did some reasearch on the name and found this:

Speaking of bad presidents that coincidentally share a name with a New Hampshire Mountain (I have nightmares about finding a Mt. Taft on some long lost map), across the valley from the Presidentials is the Carter range, named by some accounts for botanist Ezra Carter, and by other accounts for one member of a pair of lost hunters (and depending on which story you believe, Mr. Hight was either Dr. Ezra's assistant or the other hunter - thus the name for Mt. Hight by the side of Carter Dome). Mt. Hayes, just north of Gorham on the Appalachian Trail, was not named after the abysmal Rutherford B. Hayes, but the proprietor of a local inn.

The site I found it is here:

chomp: wish I had known you were in the area to share a brew! We were on the 'Cats playing alphabet soup.

Yea, I know - I ran into Pete who was hitching back to his car. I picked him up and gave him a ride back to 19 Mile. I looked for you guys, but I had tickets to the Manchester Monarchs that night, so I didn't have a lot of time to hang out. I was thinking about joining you guys, but I didn't get out of bed early enough.

Yep. A ride in that nifty van. Thanks again.

Sherpa, I hung around the bottom, near the ski lift waiting for you to finish. After a couple hours, I started wondering if I maybe I was in the wrong place and missed you, so I left.

First time I was ever up close to a ski area. It seemed fun to ski down. The trails were so WIDE. I'm used to skiing down 6 foot wide things. Next time I bring my skis.
