We had a large group of 5 adults and 8 kids ranging from 6-14 years old on this hike. We went up the 19 Mile Brook Trail, around Carter Dome Trail, and back down 19 M.B.. The trails were all in excellent condition, the sky was blue all day with a nice breeze on top, and there were no bugs at all - a great combination. The 19 Mile Brook Trail was easy and dry to the split with Carter Dome Trail. One bridge had washed out in last fall's storm, but a temporary board structure has been cobbled together in its place, and the crossings were no problem, even for those with short legs. The kids led the charge up to Mt. Hight, where the 25-30 mph wind and great views to the snow-dappled Presidentials were fantastic.
The trail to Carter Dome was clear except for one 30' long mud patch, which we avoided by using the bypass trail through the scrub, and one section of monorail which was about 200' long and 1'-3' deep. In the strong sun the monorail was soft, and the kids enjoyed making snowballs and trying to balance on its ridge without slipping to one side or the other. From Carter Dome to the hut was dry trail, albeit very steep. Aside from the short patch of monorail, there was no snow or ice on the entire loop, and traction is certainly not needed. Nine members of our group stayed the night at the hut, and 4 of us headed down the 19 Mile Brook Trail back to the car. The very top section of 19 M.B. has water flowing down the rocky trail, but it's not a problem, and the rest is in great shape, including a few really nice new log bridges at the various tributaries the trail crosses. An excellent day to be out, and the kids all had a fun day on the trails.
