Mt Hight is a much-underrated peak so let's give it a hand! And applause to all who helped with this rescue on Sunday. Cardiac victims often don't fare well in the mountains (if this was a cardiac event rather than dehydration or heat exhaustion/stress); helicopters usually cannot land in the Whites. Glad this fellow was gotten under medical care in 4+ hours, a relatively quick rescue.
[start quote]Man rescued from Carter Dome after apparent heart attack
CARTER DOME, N.H. A New Hampshire man who suffered an apparent heart attack while hiking on Carter Dome today was flown to Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center.
Fish and Game Lieutenant Douglas Gralenski says the man's hiking companion made a 9-1-1 call at about 4 p-m, then ran about three-quarters of a mile to the Carter hut for help.
A helicopter from Dartmouth-Hitchcock was dispatched but could not land on Carter Dome because of safety concerns.
Gralenski says the helicopter instead landed on nearby Mount Hight and personnel from the Appalachian Mountain Club physically carried the victim there for the 8 p-m rescue.
Gralenski could not immediately provide the 44-year-old man's name or condition, but says he is a New Hampshire resident and was near the summit of the 4,832-foot Carter Dome when he was stricken.[end quote]
