Mt. Israel via Wentworth Trail
Date of Hike: Sunday, March 2, 2008
Trail Conditions: Packed powder, powder, windblown
Special Equipment Required: Snowshoes
Comments: Limited room for parking on road, about halfway across the field to the base camp area.
Unplowed portion of road was tough to break both ways, as wind keeps filling it in.
Wentworth Trail had not been broken since before the most recent storm (thank you, Grayjay!)...covered in anywhere for 6" to 2 feet of sticky powder, depending upon the location (wind) and elevation.
Trail was hard to follow starting at the first peak, due to the windblown snow and lack of blazes (which are on the ledges under the snow). Ledge area between the peaks was especially hard to follow.
The Mead Trail sign near the summit was burried - that trail is not broken out.
No blowdowns.
First water crossing can be stepped over, the other three are snowbridged.
Sun/warmer temps today formed a thin crust on the snow, which should minimize wind blown snow on the trail.
