Hiked with: Hubby...and met lots of great people on the trail
Finally, we are within one of the ½ way point to our quest for the 48’s. At the advice of several members of this forum, I figured it would be a good idea to purchase TWO books to assist us on our quest: The 4000’er of the White Mountain guide and Scudder’s Viewing guide. The latter proved to be a VITAL component of our actually achieving this goal.
Having done Tom, Field, and Willey the previous Sunday, we thought that Friday would be an AWESOME day to hit our ½ way point…and Mt. Jackson a perfect candidate as it would give us the added benefit of now having completed the entire Presidential Range (cool!). We decided to do a true day hike and started out towards NH at 2:30 am. We were on the trail at 5:50 am…and well on our way.
The hike went very well, with us making wonderful time up that well maintained trail (ok, other than ONE mishap where WE kinda missed the turn…OOPS!). We had lots of laughs, solved the problems of the world, stopped often to admire this or that…and talked in length about what it must have been like to have been around when the most recent slide occurred. Finally, after only about an hour and a half, we made it to the famous Mt. Webster lookout…wow! It was awesome. After so many hikes with little to no views in the recent past, this was awesome.
HEY…that must be Jackson!! This is SO exciting…# 24 so close. We can probably get there way before 10:00 am.
Onward we must go…Webster summit up a head. The trail was quite wet, but…we were in GREAT spirits…enjoying the views and hikes. Could not WAIT to get to the summit of Jackson and pull out the Viewing guide…what ARE all those pretty peaks?
After passing a big old cairn, we quickly moved on to hit Jackson…Webster is nice, but…I want to sit and enjoy # 24 so let’s just head over there.
Hmmmm….so…isn’t there supposed to be a trail convergence right below the summit of Webster? Where did it go? Ok…maybe we just weren’t paying attention…maybe it was that side trail by the big cairn…maybe they took down the sign? (Hint #1…I am usually VERY good at following such obvious landmarks on a map).
After a bit of wicked fun scrambling…
PHEW…here we ARE!!! Summit #24!!! YIPPIE…hugs all around. Look at how far we’ve come from the summit of Webster!!
We enjoyed the views
Watched the train on Mt. Washington
Played with the Gray Jays
And got our summit shots
Time for the Scudder’s Guide…um…wait…
Jefferson shouldn’t be THERE according to the guide…it should be BETWEEN Pierce and Eisenhower…and WHAT is that extra peak in the foreground, I don’t see it in the guide (Hints #2 and #3…the guide is supposed to be VERY accurate)
Aren’t we supposed to have a FULL panorama? (Ok…Hint 4…I think I got it now!)
UH OH!! This isn’t Jackson…it’s WEBSTER!!!! AAARRRGGGHHH!!! We’ve been here an hour celebrating and…oh no!! Ok…time to get going. It’s now 10:30…sigh! Backpacks back ON…and away we go. Oh LOOK…there’s that convergence we were missing.
The hike to Jackson (Yes, the real one this time) was very uneventful and FUN. We laughed at ourselves the whole time and really enjoyed the bridges…the WATER and MUD…and the scrambling. Finally, after only 45 minutes, we made the “extra” 1.3 mile trip to truly tag our #24!
(ok…so I’m a little confused…and dyslexic?)
We spent 10 minutes marveling at the views (for the millionths time today) and seeing that Yes, the view guide really is accurate…and then headed down.
We had a GREAT hike…despite our little…um…issues and met quite a few really awesome people on the trail. Kudos and good luck to the group of young AT thru hikers we met and the way down from Jackson…
