Mt. Jackson via Webster-Jackson Trail
Date of Hike: Thursday, Jan. 10, 2008
Trail Conditions: Frozen granular, ice, bare ground, mud
Special Equipment Required: Today, none.
Comments:
Felt like a March hike. Even though it was in the 40s at Crawford Notch when I started, the trail was firm. Wore snowshoes anyway (one or two others barebooted with minimal postholing). A few wet/mud spots down low that you can go around. The rocky steeps early on were exposed.
A few blow downs after the Webster junction - one in particular was really bad (decent sized tree fell lengthwise up the trail), very hard to get around, spent 10 minutes on the return trip debranching it, so it should be fine.
Very little snow on the rock slabs up high - a few small patches of ice...was able to bareboot that section without traction. Very windy up top.
The 3 largest water crossings (1 before Webster junction, 2 after) are all exposed, somewhat tricky (but possible) to cross with snowshoes. Almost all waterbars/creeks other than those have snowbridges still.
