Mt Jefferson: Castle Tr -> The Loop -> Randolph Path -> Castle Ravine Tr 6/28/08
Trail Conditions: Wet in places, some avoidable mud. Rock scrambles/bouldering at The Castles okay. Three Castle Brook crossings on Castle Ravine Tr dicey but doable without wading. Israel River crossing at bottom of route easiest by the campsite on the south side of the river 25 yards west of "official" crossing.
Bugs: Bad in the 3,500-5,000-foot elevation band, especially black flies. Worst at 4,000 feet.
Summit of Jefferson socked in with fog and windy. Glad I packed the fleece!
Special Equipment: Poles or walking staff very helpful, sturdy boots a must on Castle Ravine's talus.
Caution: Above its junctions with The Link, the Castle Ravine Trail is difficult to follow (at a creek crossing I lost it for a while) and very rough. The talus on the headwall is loose in several places. Up or down, this is tough hiking that requires a watchful eye and a careful step. But the views are worth it if you're in shape for the route.
