Mt. Liberty via Whitehouse, Liberty Springs, and Franconia Ridge trails
Date of Hike: Monday, March 17, 2008
Trail Conditions: Powder, frozen granular
Special Equipment Required: Traction might be helpful
Comments:
I started just before 1 PM, but was the first person on these trails (a few others went up part way later in the day).
Whitehouse Trail barebootable from the Route 3 hiker parking lot. About a half an inch of powder on top of a frozen granular base.
I barebooted the Liberty Springs Trail all the way to the Mt. Liberty summit. About a half an inch at the trailhead, about 2 inches starting near the campsites, and upwards of 6" in drifts on the Franconia Ridge Trail.
The bushwack over toward the Basin parking lot had been recently broken out via snowshoes.
Franconia Ridge Trail hadn't been used today to Little Haystack or to Mt. Flume as far as I could see.
I didn't dare use what remained of any of the snowbridges on the brook crossings - it's plainly visible that people have broken through them recently.
Four blowdowns on the Liberty Springs Trail, all passable and all near the campsite area. One blowdown on the Franconia Ridge Trail to Mt. Liberty, passable.
Careful if you are putting around the Flume slide - I saw what I think was a very small avalanche while I was sitting on the Mt. Liberty summit.
