A small group of us are hiking Mt. Madison this Saturday via the Valley Way Trail. The trip is 8.4 miles with an elevation gain of 4100 feet. Book time is about 7 hours, however the weather and trail conditions could slow us down. We're planning an early start at 7:00 a.m. from the Appalachia parking area which is several miles west of Gorham on Rt. 2.
It's possible we could be returning to the parking area just as it's getting dark. It happened to us a few weeks ago when we did Mt. Adams. So it's a good idea to have a headlamp and a must to have your regular Winter gear.
Mt. Waumbek (a considerably shorter and easier hike) will be our back-up peak in case the weather on Madison is too severe when we get there. The trailhead is a short drive up Rt. 2 from Appalachia.
If interested in joining us let me know. The more the merrier...
