1/19 we hit the trail today at 8:45 and found it was well packed with only
a couple of inches of fresh snow for the first 3 miles or so. We the found
at 4000 feet or so,the snow was 6 inches of broken out snow but powdery
and unconsolidated. We continued on to the maddison hut.from there it was an
icy rock hop to the summit.I wear screw boots and the going was easy .My
wife wore kahtoola micro spikes and she said they worked well.my sister and brother inlaw wore yax trax and said they were just enough to feel confident
stepping rock to icy rock.I would not think crampons would be as easy as there was just a thin layer of ice.I saw that the people ahead of us had discarded
there snowshoes for a quick scrammble up the windy summit cone.We were
quick to get off the summit ourselves with the 50-70 mph winds. The way down was a easy comming from the hut as a totall of 14 people summited by my count
with another 2 couples turned around at the hut.we were at the trailhead at
4:25 a nice day on the mountain.4100 feet of ellavation gain from appalacia.
special equiptment:hiking poles nessesary up to hut but almost a hinderance on a rock hop up the cone.micro spikes are nessesary from there up but usefull all the way up.yax also usefull all the way up snowshoes may be usefull up to the hut esspecially if more than three inches new of snow falls.
comments:good luck to the kids trying to traverse all the way to the highland center by tommorow.Hope they do well. Also to nhtrailguy-glad you were able to find your camera were I left it for you on mt pierce 12/30/07.
