Valley Way is broken out, not fully consolidated but still barebootable, bottom to top, without any deep postholing. I still wore snowshoes for much of the day, while my colleagues barebooted.
Snow was soft due to warm temps, with enough water dripping from the trees that it might just as well have been raining. From the hut, two of our group of three went on to the summit... one in Microspikes and me in snowshoes. Both worked just fine.
Watson Path appeared to be broken out at the lower end, but with softer, less well-packed snow. Didn't get a look at the upper end.
Thanks to Andi B and Carmen A for a great New Years Eve outing! Best wishes to all for safe, enjoyable hiking in 2011.
