There was about 5" of snow on the ground and except for an occasional drift it didn't vary much from trailhead to summit. The trails up to Mt. Major were all well broken out. The three principle trails: main trail, brook trail and boulder trail were especially well broken out. They obviously saw a lot of use over the weekend.
I met Art "The Legend" Richardson out on the trails. He climbs Mt. Major three times almost every morning. He told me that with the last snow the trails are in the best condition they've been in for most of the winter as they now have a good layer of snow covering the ice that up to that point covered the trails. The ledges were probably easier today than in the summer.
The trail over to Straightback had not seen as much travel as the Mt. Major trails but was still well broken out. After Straightback there were a few tracks leading towards North Straightback and a set of prints heading towards the Jesus Valley road. There was one set of footprints on the Quarry Spur trail.
I used my Hillsounds from car to car. They were perfect for the conditions.
It was 20* at the trailhead this morning and about 20* on the top of Mt. Major. When we got back to the car about noon the temps had risen to 37*
There was a cold wind on the summit of both Major and Straightback but otherwise none at all. The sky was a deep blue today and the visibility almost unlimited.
