Mt. Major, Straightback Mtn., Mt. Anna
Date of Hike: Saturday, February 2, 2008
Trail Conditions: Frozen granular, loose granular, spring snow
Special Equipment Required: None required
Comments:
Mt. Major via Major Trail - soft spring snow down low, then frozen granular/loose granular (basically about 1-3" of crud from the rain/sleet storm). I wore snowshoes for traction, but someone else had worn sneakers!
Ledges bypass broken out.
Straightback Mountain via Major/Straightback Link - loose granular/frozen granular, pretty well broken out now. Brook crossing snowbridged.
Mt. Anna via Anna/Straightback (blue trail) - frozen granular, decently broken out now. Found it a little hard to follow through the initial fields, but beyond there it's very well blazed. I broke out the blue trail down to the overlook. Would recommend snowshoes on this stretch, as it's not particularly well travelled compared to those trails above.
Descent via Brook Trail - well broken out, brook crossings not an issue.
No blowdowns anywhere above.
