Trail Conditions: There is a winter parking lot that has been plowed, several hundred feet before the gate. Four wheel drive vehicles can still get up to the park gate. The trail had between six and eight inches of snow cover, pretty consistently below the treeline, with the deepest snow measuring 9 to 10 inches in places. There is a thick layer of ice that is hidden below the snow. Streams are still flowing below the treeline, so obtaining water did not require a stove. That said, there was the hazard of stepping into a hidden stream. In multiple places along the trail the snow was obscuring holes, streams, and other potential hazards. Above the treeline, there was a mix of icy rock and blown snow.
Special Equipment Required: Microspikes or other similar traction devices were very helpful and would be highly recommended. I came across two friendly young guys who had only brought snowshoes. No joke, when I ran into them on the trail, they were both on their "backsides" on the ground after slipping. I was wearing my spikes and navigated the same area just fine. I had snowshoes with me, but they were not needed at all.
