A while ago, Snickers, Zero-G, Doodles, and I hiked Mansfield via the Haselton trail and then down the LT to Rt 100 on the ski slope side of Mt Mansfield. Sunday, I and a friend of Maria's hiked Mansfield via Underhill State Park, which is on the west side of the Mtn, so I figured this would be something different and I'd get to hike/redline the trails on the other side and also hike the Canyon trail which I've heard much about.

While my friend had to turn around due to time constraints, we went up the Halfway House trail with the intention for me to continue and go down via Sunset Ridge trail. I hiked up to the Canyon North trail which parallels the LT but stays down off the ridge and offers a really cool hike, not really sidehilling, but some nice cool rock scrambles and crevasse hiking and one really nice viewpoint. I hiked the Canyon North trail up to the Subway, and bailed due to the rain that kind of enveloped the summit and donned rain gear. I went the .2 miles up to the ridge and ran up to the Chin.
Because of the wind and the driving drizzle, I thought I'd run over to the summit building by the Nose to eat lunch and talked to two GMC volunteers (I think) for a bit while eating my sandwich and decided to go down to the Forehead and down via the Maple Ridge trail, thinking it might be sheltered from the wind a little more than the Sunset Ridge.

Going down was very slick, slippery rocks but with the foot traffic, (passed a group of 5 going down), not seriously slick but annoyingly so. There's also one leap of faith on a 2 ft gap close to the top of the trail.... Made it to the road and hiked out back to my car, not taking any pictures from the Maple Ridge cause it would of all been white... ;)

Some pictures, mostly all of the way up:

Those canyon slots look like fun!!! :D

Will have to add that to my list of got to do's....

I'll try for a dry rock day though!!

Nice pics!!!

Hey Jay! Glad you found the Subway and Canyon trail... they are lots of fun. Did you by any chance have time to do the Cliff trail?
That one is on the Stowe side of the ridge and is similarly rugged. You can take 2 to 3 hrs to do a loop around the summit which would only take about 30 minutes to do back and forth on the ridge.

Oh no, Phil is directing someone else to trails...probably only a mile distance! Jay, check to see if it's a "Phil" mile or actual mile and 30 minutes is equal to at least 45 minutes......he blames it on metric conversion and his wheel.....................:p

It's OK! These are minutes (imperial) not miles.... minutes are Pete Hickey's job.

Nice report as usual, Jay.

Don't you think, though, that ice cream season has drawn to a close? (refering to your avatar)

I was going to take the Cliff trail down to the nose, but then I saw the sign that it goes by the tram, so I thought otherwise... I guess if Phil recommends it, one should go the other way? :p

Tyler; It's always ice cream season!
