Trail Conditions: Icy crust from the parking lot to top. Three blowdowns, the first required a bushwhack, the second was a step over and the third a crawl under. From the ridge to the top it was a groomed snowmobile trail. There were two open streams easily crossed.
Equipment: It was obvious from the beginning that traction was necessary. I used snowshoes from the trailhead to the top. Coming down I switched to stableicers. On the steeper section coming down crampons would have been much better, but I'm not using them this winter for fear of hurting the pup.
Comments: In the summer this is probably a fairly easy hike, but was somewhat tedious today due to the icy conditions. The VFTT were fairly good. I had thought about doing Owl's Head also, but when I got to the top I found that the trail had not been broken out and did not seem to be well marked. Add to that the icy conditions and I wasn't the least bit inspired to continue on. The parking lot, by the way, was not plowed and I parked by the highway. This was Lauky's first 3000 footer.
