We are spending a couple of weeks in the mountains of north Georgia and have been able to pick up a couple of state high points.
The first was the Georgia state high point Brasstown Bald. This strange name comes from a misunderstanding of the Indian word "New Green Place".
Anyway, here he is, the highest dog in the state of Georgia. We actually cheated on this one. We drove to the parking lot then climbed the .6 of a mile to the top around 4700'.
Two days later we drove up to the Asheville NC area to climb Mt. Mitchell. It was Saturday 6/26. Unlike the Big W, there are to my knowledge only two ways to get up Mt. Mitchell. You either drive up the auto road which is free by the way, or you go up the Mt. Mitchell trail which starts at the Black Mountain camp ground, elevation at the trailhead 2900'. That's what we chose to do.
The mountain is covered with Rhododendron which is very thick up to almost 5000'
The big surprise on this trail is how gentle it is. On the entire hike there was never a place where it is steep. Guess what, down here have have something almost unknown to the Whites, it's called switchbacks. I never would have dreamed a trail of this magnitude could be so "gentle."
And so, after 5.5 miles and 3700' elevation gain, here he is, the highest dog not only in North Carolina, but the highest dog east of the Mississippi. Other than that it was a very warm and humid hike it was a great hike, loved every bit of it.
