Attemped to climb Mt. Moriah via Carter-Moriah Trail in Gorham, but didn't make it today. Trail was packed out well from trailhead to Mt. Surprise, but there was nothing packed out from Mt. Surprise to Moriah. In fact, we saw no evidence that the section of trail between Sunrise & Moriah has been used since the first time it snowed up there a few weeks ago. Since it was only two of us, we had to turn back within 1 mile of the summit. It took us over 2 hours to break 1 mile of trail
(drifts are up to 4 feet deep now at the 3200-3500ft line).
Used snowshoes from trailhead to turn-around point 1 mile from summit. They were pretty much essential for the entire route. Snow was 10-12 inches deep at trailhead to 30+ inches deep at around the 3200ft mark).
Trail is currently packed extremely well from trailhead to Mt. Surprise, and OK from Mt. Surprise to our turn-around point. It is easy to follow the trail, except for one point near Mt. Surprise (bear right to stay on the main trail, a group of hikers must have gotten lost by bearing left). The next group of 2 or 3 that attempts this route should be able to summit with some hard work.
Crampons not needed for short section of ledges on this route, but it will take a little bit of care with the snowshoes.
