Date of Hike: Mon., 31 Oct. 2011
Trail: Dicey's Mill Trail
Conditions: About 2 to 4 inches of snow down low (a lot of it diminished by the afternoon). As one got higher the snow levels increased to about 8 to 10 inches on the summit. Crossed the stream on rocks. I didn't want to try the fallen tree route, since it had about 6 inches of snow on it. The stream is running low. The snow was wet and heavy, actually piling up on my pole baskets. I bare-booted the whole way. Snow shoes may have worked better in some of the deeper stuff, but the snow would have just balled them up. I used my Hillsounds coming back down the steeps. Not sure how good they were working since they were balling up too. I went back to bare-boots after the steeps, which seemed to work best. No bad blow-downs to mention, but thanks to WODC, (or whomever), for removing that monster blow-down that was about half way up the Dicey sidehill traverse, it was there in September, and hard to get around. It took a lot of chops to get through that one I bet. Some cars in the lot today, but I had Dicey to myself. No tracks coming off the Rollins. Beautiful sunny day with no wind.
