That moose poop was a tease! Too bad you didn't spot her. Nice report though. I still have to do Passaconaway, but I've heard the hike isn't the most exciting. Any other ways to make it more interesting? Maybe hit Whiteface as well and down Blueberry Ledge??

The way you mentioned is supposed to be great. I've already hiked Whiteface coming from the Tripyramids, so I opted on the Oliveran Brook route instead. I wouldn't say it was uniteresting though, but one might as well take another route to get in some other peaks if they haven't done them before. :)

I did the Whiteface/Passaconway loop today. It was quite enjoyable. The Blueberry Ledges trail is neat because it travels through some nice clearings (one had a 5' snowman in it!) and it is gradual until the last mile or so. There is a tricky icy ledge near the South Summit right now. Kinda fun to navigate, actually. The views South off of Whiteface are awesome. I could see all kinds of lakes, including Winnipesaukee.

The trip across the ridge was pleasant with lots of openings to view the Sleepers, Osceolas and Tripyramids.

Passaconway is a highly underrated mountain. There is a wooded summit, but the view from just below the summit (as well as just past the summit) is spectacular. You can see over half of the White Mountain 4000'ers from there. I could count 25, but if I had binoculars, I might have been able to pick out Bond, Bondcliff, South Twin and North Twin from a clump of snowcapped peaks behind Carrigain and the Hancocks. The Dicey's Mill trail was beautiful and I would do it again in a heartbeat. The trip is worth the view and then some!

Other ways

Proszach, there's plenty of other ways. Try Old Mast and Walden to bag a 3K along the way (come on, you KNOW you'll be doing the 3K list eventually). Or how about Wonalancet Range and Walden? Or try Old Mast - Square Ledge - Walden. Say hello to the perigrine falcon for me. And then (should I dare suggest it?) there's Passaconaway slide. Or is it Downes Brook slide?

So I'm guessing GW did Dicey's from the south, Walden from the east, the slide from the north . . . I wonder what his western route was. Now THAT would be an interesting trip.

Whiteface & Passaconaway

I did the hike last summer, ascending via Whiteface (Blueberry Ledge Trail) & then Rollins Trail over to Passaconaway. Returned via Walden & Wonalancet Range Trail. This descent route goes over Mt. Hibbard which is on the "52 Peaks with a View" list. See my photo album of this hike here The photos starting with letter "D" are for this hike. Also see MichaelJ's hike here (scroll down to "Whiteface & Passaconaway" on May 22, 2004) as his report is under much more adverse conditions and certainly worth reading if the weather is iffy and your thinking about it. Make sure you click on his camera at the end of his report.
