Mt. Pemigewasset (Indian Head)
Sun 3/7/10
Trail Conditions: slushy corn snow everywhere, only a few inches at bottom and probably 1 1/2 - 2 feet at top - not as much as you might think given the reports of five feet or more depths in Crawford and Pinkham Notches. Got a little slippery going down. Some postholing when you depart from the hard-packed middle of the trail.
Special Equipment Required: traction required - snowshoes might be helpful about half-way up. Our party did Stabilicers entire way with no issue. We passed a departing woman who brought crampons and said they were overkill.
Comments: Spectacular views through pristine skies and not much wind at the top - no coats needed all day long. Our 4th time doing Mt. Pemi but its views of the Franconia Ridge peaks like church spires across the valley make it an old friend you never tire of revisiting. Surprisingly few people here, maybe you were all off bagging bigger loftier peaks. The 15-year old autistic wonderboys did spectacularly with just Mom today. Miles and miles of smiles up and down the trail, the kind that say Joy without words.
