On the way to Marcy Dam it was half ice and half mud in the morning. At the end of a fantastic, warm day, it was about 85% mud on the way back from the dam. The rest was mostly ice, with a couple dry areas and some mud. We used microspikes from after the high river bridge to the summit. On the way down we switched to crampons for the steep part, which went very well, and then back to microspikes and bare booting through the mud to end the day. Gaiters are helpful for the mud.
