trails: bushwhack
conditions: after hiking northwest crystal earlier in the day i got back onto cedar stream road and drove it to a point about 11.7 miles from rt. 145 near pittsburg. here i turned right onto another road with a gate labelled as number 195 and drove a couple more tenths before parking before the road descends to cross over a brook. the north slopes of pisgah were clearly visible to the south. i walked a short distance down the road to get to the other side of the small stream then bushwhacked up in a direct line towards the summit. woods were open and soggy in places down low. there was soon a coating of snow as i climbed up through previously logged area at times thick with hobblebush. the woods remained open into the spruce/fir zone and all the way to the highpoint.
equipment: blaze orange.
comments: this bushwhack was a real treat with nice open hardwoods much of the way and great views up to magalloway and other northern points. lots of moose sign up around the summit and a notable amount of deer sign on the lower slopes. a great day to be out.
