Mt. Shaw, Black Snout (Castle map, not topo map) via Mt. Shaw Trail, Black Snout Spur

Date of Hike: Sunday, Jan. 20, 2008

Trail Conditions: Loose granular, packed powder

Special Equipment Required: Snowshoes recommended but not required

Comments:

Parking lot (unofficial, side of Route 171) not plowed, but has had a few vehicles in it, so should be okay if you have 4WD or AWD.

The flats down low were maybe 2-4" of loose/frozen granular. Depth increased as ascent continued, about 6" or so max. Loose granular (crust on sides of trail) changed to packed powder at carriage road.

I broke trail to Black Snout (previous snowshoers bushwacked up to it from carriage road) and from Black Snout Spur to the snowmobile trail just before Mt. Shaw. 6-8" of powder, decently packed now.

Snowmobile trail (last quarter mile or so to Shaw) was recently groomed, but had seen no snowmobile traffic at all. Very windy up high.

Brook crossings not snowbridged, but also not a problem. All trails mentioned should be pretty well packed out now. No blowdowns to report.
