Austin Brook Trail to Gentian Pond Shelter, AT over Mt Success, Mt Carlo and Goose Eye Mtn, down Goose Eye Trail to posted car. All trails in great shape.

Recent trail work on Austin Brook Trail is outstanding! The trail across the beaver meadow a half mile down from Gentian Pond includes relocation to avoid buswhack around (or wade through) beaver activity. Excellent new puncheon work with indigenous material significantly improves trail. (Note: it is currently possible to drive about two miles up this trail as follows - .5 miles east of the turnstile start of the trail, turn left up Mill Brook Rd. Take left fork at 1.5 miles and right fork at 1.6 miles.) The whole lower trail - all the way back to the turnstile - is either on logging roads or on a nice, well brushed out soft treadway with gentle grades.

Mahoosuc Trail (AT) ascends rather steeply in several pitches - interrupted by a few short descents - to rounded top of Mt Success. Well-maintained, though it is slippery when wet on many high angle slab ledges. East of Mt Success to the NH/ME border the brush is a little closer to the trail centerline.

We'd intended to descend via the Carlo Col Trail, but had plenty of energy so continued to the top of Goose Eye Mtn and descended via Goose Eye Trail. As are all the trails in this sector, the Goose Eye Trail is well-maintained, though also like all the rest at any elevation, there are many very steep slab ledges to climb or descend.

Saw 7 NOBOs at Gentian Pond Shelter, two more NOBOs at NH/ME border, and 6 SOBOs on trail. We were the only day-hikers.
