Conditions: Avalon and A-Z Trails, plus the Mt Tom Spur are still well broken with hard-packed snow.
Special Equipment Required: Snowshoes are highly recommended, not only for added traction, but also to prevent post-holing the trail.
Comments: Started out with intention of breaking trail to Mt. Tremont. However, the plow crews had not yet cleared the parking area on the road shoulder opposite the trailhead. Perhaps later in the day they will have done this since they were clearing the parking area at the Nancy Pond trailhead when I passed by.
And so, with the Mt. Tremont option gone, decided to just do a quick trek up to Mt. Tom. During this trek, I noticed that the Avalon Trail needs to be broke out again. Very recent VFTT reports indicate that others have broken out this trail. However, now there’s no remaining evidence of this (see photo link).
At the intersection of the Mt Tom Spur & Willey Range Trail there was still some evidence that the Willey Range Trail had been broken out, but this was quickly being erased by new snow squalls and wind. Beyond the Mt Tom Spur intersection, the A-Z Trail appeared to be very well broken out.
Didn’t really expect any views today, and my expectations were met. There were no views to speak of, especially since there was a snow squall in progress while on the summit (see photo link). Views or no views, it's always great to be out hiking in the Whites, especially in the winter!
