Date of Hike: Thursday April 24, 2008
Trail Conditions: Trail mostly covered in snow with some bare ground showing towards the bottom and top of the trail. Snow on the "mono rail" was fairly well packed, snow off the mono rail was wet and post holing was a frequent occurrence in bare boots. In some areas towards the bottom it wasn't uncommon to post hole through the mono rail. Stream/river crossings challenging with fast moving and relatively high water. The safety of any lasting snow bridges will be questionable in coming days.
Special Equipment Required: Snowshoes - essential. Gators - useful. Extra socks - useful.
Comments: It was a great day, and a nice snowshoe although the going was slow. Expect this hike to take considerably longer than if there was no snow. There were 4 river crossings when we were there. The first two will get your boots wet if you leave them on. The third one had a tiny snow bridge over a rock when we were there, but it is probably gone by now. The fourth one required that we go a ways upstream, but that snow looked like it wouldn't last long. Crossing downstream would be challenging.
Pack your snow shoes - you will most likely need them to get to the A-Z trail and beyond. The summit on Tom was great - the bench at the top was surrounded by bare ground. There was an extreamly friendly bird hanging out on the summit - it came within feet of us and our dogs! Oh, if you hike with dogs this may kick their butt a little, even really high energy dogs!
