Date of Hike: 3/6/10
Trail Conditions: Packed Powder
Special Equipment Required: Snowshoes, standard above treeline gear
Comments: The Ammonoosuc Ravine Trail is a maze of trails that all SEEM to lead to the top or bottom depending on which way you're headed. We were advised to choose to stay to the left (River side) on the ascent whenever faced with a split in the trail and to the right (River side) on the decent. LOTS of folks out today - hikers and skiers. Amazing bluebird day. Only issue was the constant wind above the Lake of the Clouds hut. With proper gear, it was totally manageable, but unfortunately we couldn't protect our dog's face and eyes from the wind-blown powder that was constantly being pelted against him, so we bailed within a stone's-throw of the summit. We turned around and he happily bounded back down to the hut. No problems on Monroe.
