We parked at the lower cog parking lot.

Trails: Jewell Trail, Gulfside, Crawford Path, Ammonoosuc Ravine Trail.

Conditions: All trails were solidly packed, the summit cones were rime ice with icy drifts and only a few rocks poking out. The descent from Monroe via ammo had quite a few drifts and spruce traps to avoid before getting on the solid path back down to Marshfield Station.

Traction today: microspikes to the junction of Gulfside, snowshoes to Washington summit, crampons down to Lakes Hut, Monroe summit and out the ammo.

It was an absolutely gorgeous day to be above tree line! Light winds at both of the summits, and along the ravine coming down Crawford Path to Lakes Hut. Little or no wind below treeline. My hiking companion Denise Penn finished her winter 4s on Washington and I added Monore to make 31 winter 4ks for me.

It was thrilling to be climbing two of the most beautiful summits in the White Mountains on such a stunning day! This was my third attempt on Monroe. Last year my husband Fran, Beth and Steve had to turn around at the hut due to white out condidtions. Last Monday Denise and I just could not find the Ammo trail. I guess the third time is the charm!
