Somthing I noticed while on Jefferson on Wed. was that it almost looked like there were two trains on the C(Sm)og railway. I saw one almost at the summit and a cloud of smoke at the half way point that was just as thick.

Can anyone tell me what Im missing. I thought there was only one car on that rail.

Thanks
Chad

There are two or three sidings where the trains can pull off to let the uphill trains go by. Usually they run two up at a time, then when they are coming down two more are going up. The down trails pull off on the sidings, let the uphill trains go by, then back up onto the tracks and continue down.

Do they change it by the seasons. Ive only hiked Wash. during the early fall and all I saw was one car on the rail.

We did the Cog when I was a kid, scary stuff.
YOU...CAN...FEEL...EVERY...SINGLE...COG...THE...ENTIRE...WAY...UP...AND...DOWN...and the soot is a real bonus.
I just kept waiting to hear the sound of metal snapping.

When we did Washington/Clay back end of June, there were 4 going up and down. I have a couple of good pictures of them I took that day which I would throw in here right now.... but I'm at work at the moment. Yeah, I know, get back to work!!!

My guess is that with the increase in the price of diesel fuel, the Cog will not be converting from coal any time soon, although this conversion has been in their long-range plans from time to time.
