Gorgeous day to be above treeline. Parked in Upper Cog lot and hiked up Ammonoosuc Tr. Packed snow starting about a mile up all the way to the hut. Took Camel Tr. to Boott Spur, then north to Lawn Cut- Off. Mostly bare rock with snow patches. Continued past Tucks headwall and traversed East Snowfields above Alpine Garden Tr. (still lots of continuous snow for skiing), then met the Auto Rd just below Ball Crag. Up Auto Rd a bit, then cut over to Gulfside Tr. to Mt. Clay and down Jewell Tr. (about 1/2 mile of snow on trail below treeline) to Cog lot. Wonderful alpine day with tremendous views into the still snowy gulfs and ravines. More skiers around than hikers.
Lightweight aluminum Kahtoola crampons and trekking poles made the steep section of the Ammo Tr. much easier. Low gaiters and a sun hat were useful as well.
